Mettle is the free mobile business bank account by NatWest built for the self-employed.

Customers can apply for an account in minutes, create and send customised invoices and keep track of their books – all from their phone or computer. Mettle gives customers a range of tools to help with payments, bookkeeping and tax.

Customers can connect to accounting software like FreeAgent, to easily see how much tax they’re likely to owe with a real-time tax calculation, and automatically save for tax with Money pots. Plus, they can earn interest on their money with a savings pot.

The account comes with a UK sort code and account number and an in-app chat feature so that customers can speak to real people when they need help. Mettle is a mobile-based bank account, so you can't go into a NatWest branch to open or discuss your account.

To open a Mettle account, you’ll need to be a sole trader or a limited company with up to two owners.

You’ll also need to be a UK-based company with owners that are UK residents.

Mettle is available through the App Store and Play Store on compatible devices.

To get started, go to the “Apply now” section at the bottom of the page and check whether Mettle might be suitable for you. You will then get redirected to the Mettle website or app to apply.

The Mettle bank account is provided by National Westminster Bank plc trading as Mettle. It is protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). This means that eligible deposits are protected up to £85,000.

With a savings pot, you could earn 1.46% AER, 1.45% Gross p.a (variable) on balances from as little as £10. You can set aside up to £1m in your savings pot in addition to the maximum limit of your main account and regular pots.

AER stands for Annual Equivalent Rate. It shows you what the rate would be if interest was paid and compounded each year. Gross is the interest rate you’re paid without the deduction of UK income tax. p.a is per annum (per year).
